The Widow's Extra Ticket

It was the most anticipated game of the season, and the stadium was a sea of screaming fans. A man named Steve was thrilled to have scored a seat right behind the team bench. However, as the kickoff approached, he noticed that the seat directly next to him remained empty.

During the first quarter, Steve turned to the woman on the other side of the vacant chair. "I hope you don’t mind me asking," he said, "but who in their right mind would leave a seat like this empty for the championship?"

The woman smiled sadly. "Actually, that was my husband’s seat. We were married for forty-five years, and we never missed a single home game together. But he passed away last month."

Steve was moved. "I am so deeply sorry for your loss. That’s a beautiful tribute to his memory. But couldn't you have found a friend or a family member to come with you today so the seat wouldn't go to waste?"

The woman shook her head and sighed. "Oh, I tried. I really did."

"And?" Steve asked.

"They're all at the funeral," she replied, focusing back on the scoreboard.
