The Programmer and the Magic Lamp
A weary programmer was walking along the beach during a much-needed vacation when he stumbled upon an old brass lamp. He gave it a rub, and out popped a powerful genie. "I will grant you one wish," the genie boomed. "But choose wisely!"
The programmer thought for a moment. "I’ve always wanted to visit Hawaii, but I’m terrified of flying and I get seasick on boats. Can you build me a bridge from California to Honolulu so I can drive there?"
The genie frowned. "Do you have any idea how much concrete and steel that would take? The depth of the Pacific Ocean is immense! That’s nearly impossible, even for me. Is there anything else you want?"
The programmer sighed and pulled a laptop from his bag. "Okay. I’ve been working on this legacy code for three years. Can you make it readable, document all the functions, and ensure there are no bugs in the next release?"
The genie stared at the screen for ten seconds, rubbed his temples, and looked back at the man. "So, did you want that bridge to be two lanes or four?"
