A new prisoner arrived and was quickly told he needed to get a job inside the prison.

So the next morning, he was brought into a small office where an older inmate sat behind a desk, acting like a manager.

The older inmate looked him up and down.

Alright, what kind of skills you got?

The new guy tried to sound confident.

I’m good with tools, I follow instructions, and I work well under pressure.

The older inmate nodded.

That’s good. We got kitchen work, laundry, and maintenance.

The new guy leaned in.

What pays the best?

The older inmate raised an eyebrow.

Pays?

Yeah, the new guy said. I mean, I’m trying to work my way up.

The older inmate stared at him for a second.

Then slowly leaned back in his chair.
